St. John Baptist Church
Rev. Raymunda Barnes is the pastor-elect of the St. John Baptist Church, located in the Orange Grove community of Gulfport, MS. St. John Baptist Church was organized in 1925. Prior to being called to St. John Baptist Church, Pastor Barnes served as an associate minister at the First Missionary Baptist Church-Biloxi, under the leadership of Pastor Eric Dickey. While serving at First Missionary Baptist-Biloxi, Pastor Barnes served in many capacities, as Youth Director, coordinated Marriage and Single Retreats, implemented a Children’s Church Service, reconstructed the Bible classes for ages 3-18, implemented career development activities, and introduced N.O.A.H. (Night Out Against Halloween).
Academically, Pastor Barnes graduated from D’Iberville High School in 1991, graduated from Alcorn State University (member of the ASU Golf Team) in 1996, graduated from William Carey University in 2002 (Masters of Education), and currently enrolled in the doctoral program in Higher Education Administration at the University of Southern Mississippi. Pastor Barnes is also a 2017 graduate of the Mississippi Community College Leadership Academy, and successfully completed the Education Policy Fellowship Program in 2014-15, through the Institute of Educational Leadership at Mississippi State University.
Professionally, Pastor Barnes serves as Assistant Vice President of Pearl River Community College. Prior to transitioning into administration, Pastor Barnes served as an Instructor of History and as an Instructor of Adult Education.
Pastor Barnes was selected as the 2017 Hancock County Citizen of the Year for his tireless efforts in promoting education and civic growth to the citizens of Hancock County. Pastor Barnes is a board member of the Gulf Coast Community Foundation, the Hancock Chamber of Commerce, the Coast Electric Advisory Committee/Coast Electric Community Trust Committee, and also serves as the chairman of the Education Committee for the Hancock Chamber of Commerce.
Most importantly, Pastor Barnes believes in family. He gives credit to God and his parents, the late Ray H. Barnes and his mother Zeleder E. Barnes, for instilling in him his love for God and family. As this generation of Barnes’ children carries on the Barnes legacy, acknowledgement must be given to God Almighty for his children, siblings, extended family, and his loving and devoted wife of 21 years, Sharita Barnes.
